It All Started with My Own Dogs
As a dog owner, I have had the privilege of building a unique and special bond with my dogs. But it wasn’t always easy.
What should you do when your dog insists on urinating indoors and refuses to relieve itself outside? Why does it chew the legs of tables and chairs? Why doesn’t it come when called, or even runs away when you approach? How can you stop your dog from barking at other dogs or teach it to walk calmly on a lead?
These were just some of the many questions that arose as my dogs grew up. That was when I sought guidance from professional dog trainers and behaviour specialists, and gradually became more confident in understanding my dogs.
And do you know what the biggest lesson was?
I realised that, more often than not, I was the one who needed to learn.
I learned that I could have done much more while my dogs were still puppies to prevent many of the behaviours that appeared later. I discovered the importance of truly understanding what it means to be a dog, respecting their nature and their needs, and communicating with them in a clear, fair and consistent way. I also realised that playing, training and providing daily mental stimulation not only improves learning but, above all, strengthens the bond of trust between dog and owner.
That discovery inspired me to keep learning.
Over the years, I have complemented my practical experience with a wide range of courses, seminars and workshops in dog training and canine behaviour, both in Portugal and abroad. However, it has been hands-on experience that has truly shaped my knowledge.
